Facebook chooses German e-mail provider Web.de and GMX as first Open ID partner in Europe

network Facebook chooses the leading German e-mail provider Web.de and GMX as
the first partner for Open ID in Europe. "The
partnership with Facebook is an important step for Web.de and GMX to promote
our product navigator", said Jan Oetjen, managing director of Web.de.(-> deutsche Version/german version)
Web.de and GMX
are subsidiaries of United Internet, the No. 1 hosting company in the world. Web.de
and GMX want to establish their e-mail products as navigators to the social
web. Now, users of Web.de and GMX can use their IDs for the login to Facebook. "We
are really happy to partner with the best internet company in Germany", said
Javier Olivan, responsible for the international business of Facebook. Web.de
and GMX are representing the majority of the users of Facebook in Germany. "In the short and mid
terms we have no plans for further Open IP partnerships in Europe",
said Olivan. United Internet wants to push his operations in the US. United
Internet is offering hosting services in the US (Brand: 1&1) und is still
number 4 in the hosting market. GMX.com is working as an e-mail provider in the
US.
Facebook is now
the No.1 social network in Germany.
According to data from Nielsen, 6.2 million people (unique audience) visits
Facebook.com in july in Germany,
50 percent more comparing to march. No. 2 is the network Wer-kennt-wen.de, a
subsidiary of the media company Bertelsmann. The three VZ networks (StudiVZ,
SchuelerVZ and MeinVZ) have an aggregated reach of 8,7 million unique visitors per month.

Linkedin, the
business network, has a reach auf 440.000 people in Germany, much less than the german
market learder Xing.
